The objective of instructional design is to make learning more approachable, adaptable, and inspirational for learners. In order to ensure retention and application of knowledge, I follow the theories and guidelines explained below:
Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning
When designing media content, I apply principles from the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, originated by Richard Mayer. This theory explains how the mind's auditory and visual channels allow for more active and engaging ways in which learners can process information.

ADDIE Model:
I also use the ADDIE Model as a guideline for building effective training and performance support tools. Here's a bit about how I personally utilize the ADDIE model:
I also use the ADDIE Model as a guideline for building effective training and performance support tools. Here's a bit about how I personally utilize the ADDIE model:
- First, I assess the learning needs. Where one might learn well from a video demo, another might benefit from written instructions. Therefore, I always make sure to understand the audience, especially when there is an opportunity to learn more about them through assessments, surveys, observation, etc. By being conscious of different learning styles, we can shape the way we share concepts and insights, helping one another grow and learn.
- The next step is to design the training. I use this time to develop learning objectives (that utilize Blooms Taxonomy action verbs), organize content, plan exercises and assessments, and determine media selection. Typically, I organize this information in a visual design strategy document or storyboard. In previous roles I've had, this was also the time to create prototypes and determine the look and feel of the design, if applicable.
- Next, I develop the training materials. This is my favorite part. Technology, whether it be an LMS system, training module, instructional video, virtual reality experience, etc., is the gateway to making learning more efficient and effective in today's world. My background in multimedia design has been a crucial asset to my success in the instructional technology field and my attention to detail takes it a step further. Creativity and critique go hand in hand. In this phase I focus on the training development and ensuring that it is flawless.
- The implementation phase is where all of the hard work shows. In my experience, this phase as been teaching a course, sending out a module on an LMS, or even sharing the content on social media; yes, that is E-Learning! I am an excellent communicator which prompts excellent face to face instruction and learner feedback. Additionally, I'm tech savvy and know my way around a digital learning environment, LMS, and social media platforms.
- Finally, the evaluation phase! Were the learner's test results meeting their projected scores? Was the learner feedback positive? This last phase always challenges me to think about what worked and what didn't. With that time for reflection, it gives me the opportunity to improve the training for next time and apply that knowledge to new trainings in the future.
